Ananda is a global spiritual movement, based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, dedicated to help individuals live in joy and achieve self-realization through the ancient teachings of Kriya Yoga, meditation and right living. Ananda was founded in 1969 by Swami Kriyananda, a direct disciple
of Paramhansa Yogananda. Paramhansa Yogananda was the last in a line of
Self-realized gurus. Before his passing, Swami Kriyananda named Nayaswami
Jyotish as his spiritual successor.
Ananda Sangha Hyderabad is a vibrant branch of the global spiritual
movement, Ananda Sangha Worldwide, established in 1968 by Swami
Kriyananda, a direct disciple of the renowned Indian master, Paramhansa
Yogananda. Guided by Yogananda’s profound teachings, Ananda Sangha encompasses all
facets of human existence, from the pursuit of happiness in everyday life to the
attainment of ultimate bliss through Self-Realization

Paramhansa Yogananda
Paramhansa Yogananda, (1893 – 1952), was the first yoga master of India to take
up permanent residence in the West. Yogananda was born Mukunda Lal Ghosh to a wealthy Bengali family in
Gorakhpur, India. From earliest childhood the young Mukunda displayed an
intensely spiritual disposition. His favorite pastime was visiting saints, and his
spiritual quest eventually led him to his guru Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri of
Serampore. Under his guru’s training Mukunda attained, in the amazingly short
period of six months, the high state of samadhi, or unconditioned oneness with
God.
Yogananda’s best known work today is the Autobiography of a Yogi. Considered
a spiritual masterpiece and acclaimed by prominent men from many fields, the
book has inspired and continues to inspire millions with a vision of their own
innate Divinity.

Swami Sri Yukteshwar
Swami Sri Yukteswar ji was the Guru of Paramhansa Yogananda. His given name
was Priya Nath Karar. Upon leaving college, he married and had a daughter, and
in 1884 he became a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya. After the death of his wife,
Priya Nath Karar became a Swami and received the name Sri Yukteswar Giri.
Sri Yukteswar ji founded two hermitages, one in Serampore near Kolkata, and
one in Puri, Orissa. They formed the backdrop for Paramhansa Yogananda’s
training and his many experiences narrated in the Autobiography of a Yogi.
He wrote a book called “The Holy Science”, published by Yogoda Satsanga
Society of India.
This book establishes a fundamental harmony between the difficult biblical
book, revelation, and the Sankhya philosophy of India.

Lahiri Mahasaya
Lahiri Mahasaya was the guru of Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, and thus the
param-guru of Paramhansa Yogananda. Lahiri Mahasaya was chosen by his
guru Mahavatar Babaji to disseminate the teachings of Kriya Yoga to the world.
A fully liberated soul, Lahiri Mahasaya was yet a married householder with
numerous responsibilities. His harmonious life served as a beacon of hope and
inspiration to show men with worldly responsibilities how they too could tread
the path of Enlightenment.
For his role in bringing the high teachings of Kriya Yoga to the masses and
thereby opening the doors of yoga freedom to all men, Paramhansa Yogananda
bestowed on Lahiri Mahasaya the title of “Yogavatar,” or Incarnation of Yoga.
Lahiri Mahasaya lived most of his life in Benares, until his conscious passing in
1895. He was also the guru of Paramhahsa Yogananda’s parents, and
prophesized that Paramahansa Yogananda would be a “Spiritual Engine,”
carrying many souls to God’s kingdom.

Mahavatar Babaji
The first in this line of gurus, Babaji is of unknown age, and lives in the
Himalayas with a few highly advanced students. Yogananda called him
“Babaji-Krishna” saying that Babaji was Krishna in a former incarnation. Seeing
that in the present scientific age, people were better prepared to receive
higher knowledge, Babaji directed his disciple, Lahiri Mahasaya, to reintroduce
the meditation science of Kriya Yoga to the world.
Yogananda, in his Autobiography of a Yogi, gives the following description of
“the deathless guru”:
“No limiting facts about Babaji’s family or birthplace, dear to the annalist’s
heart, have ever been discovered. His speech is generally in Hindi, but he
converses easily in any language. He has adopted the simple name of Babaji
(revered father); other titles of respect given him by Lahiri Mahasaya’s disciples
are Mahamuni Babaji Maharaj (supreme ecstatic saint), Maha Yogi (greatest of
yogis), Trambak Baba and Shiva Baba (titles of avatars of Shiva).
“The deathless guru bears no marks of age on his body; he appears to be no
more than a youth of twenty-five. Fair-skinned, of medium build and height,
Babaji’s beautiful, strong body radiates a perceptible glow. His eyes are dark,
calm, and tender; his long, lustrous hair is copper-colored. As his undecaying
body requires no food, the master seldom eats. As a social courtesy to visiting
disciples, he occasionally accepts fruits, or rice cooked in milk and clarified
butter.”
In 1920, Paramhansa Yogananda was commanded in a vision to serve as the
emissary of the Kriya Yoga teachings to the West. Yogananda decided to pray
deeply to God, intent on receiving God’s assurance and blessing on his
impending mission. In response Babaji himself appeared to Yogananda,
blessing him and promising him the ultimate protection

In Autobiography of a Yogi, Yoganandaji writes about Jesus appearing to Mahavatar Babaji, with the thought of sending someone (Yoganandaji) to show the teachings of Sanatan Dharma to the West. Yoganandaji said Jesus was a great yogi and a true Master with the same message that he wished to give to his disciples.
